Valedictorian Speech
Principal Reyes, teachers, parents, and the Class of 2026, the people I have spent the last four years complaining about homework with.
I was told to say something wise up here. I am eighteen. The wisest thing I know is that the vending machine on the second floor takes your money and that Mr. Daniels can hear you talking from across the gym, so do not try it.
But here is the one real thing I have got. Four years ago most of us did not know each other. We got sorted into the same building and told to grow up together, and somehow we did. We failed tests together. We lost a championship together, which I am still not over. We figured out who we were while pretending we already knew.
That is the part no transcript shows. Not the grades. The fact that strangers became the people who got us through.
We are about to scatter. Some of you I will never see again, and that is a strange thing to say out loud. So while we are all still in one room, thank you. To the teachers who stayed late. To the parents in the back row trying not to cry and failing. And to my class, for being the best part of the worst-smelling building in town.
Go do something good out there. We are ready. Congratulations, Class of 2026.
Salutatorian Speech (Ceremony Opener)
Good evening, everyone, and welcome. I am Aisha, your salutatorian, which I have learned means second place with extra responsibilities.
I get to open the ceremony, so let me do my actual job and set the scene. Look around this room. The teachers who taught us, the families who fed us and drove us and waited up for us, and the two hundred of us in these slightly ridiculous gowns. This is everyone who got us here, in one place, for about an hour.
We spent four years desperate to leave this school. Funny how quiet it got when they finally said we could.
I am not going to give the big speech. That is coming, and it is in good hands. I am just here to say: take the picture, hug the teacher you have been meaning to thank, and let yourself feel this before it is over.
Now, please join me in welcoming the people who actually run this place, and then the speech you are all waiting for. Congratulations, everyone. We made it.
